I AM blessed. Not because of anything I have done, learned or earned. Not because of my social status or my bank account. I am blessed by God, and you may be too.
I am blessed because of what God has done for me through his son Jesus. Being blessed is a condition of my heart.
Recently there has been a big kerfuffle over Christians saying “I am blessed”. Many are vowing to stop saying it. I will never stop proclaiming that I AM blessed.
I’m not rich. I’m not poor. I’m not in any way extraordinary. I am saved by grace through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Everything else that happens in my life is sifted through that filter. EVERYTHING.
Being blessed does not mean being without pain or loss. Being blessed also does not mean that I have been given unexpected wealth or fortune. I am blessed because “I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. “ (Romans 8:38-39 – NIV)
I understand how some people could be confused by the saying. I understand some may feel that my condition of being blessed highlights their perceived lack of blessing, but that is simply a wrong conclusion. I will not refuse to acknowledge Christ in my life because others misunderstand what that looks like. You see, the blessed life is available to everyone because “God so loved the world the He gave His one and only son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Again, this is not a prosperity gospel I’m preaching. This is a saved by grace gospel.
If you don’t know that you ARE blessed, I would LOVE to talk with you about that. If you know that you ARE blessed, please shout it from the roof tops and make sure that people know WHY you are blessed. Please acknowledge all of your blessings, not just what those without Christ would acknowledge as blessings. We do not change the world by stating the obvious.
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. (James 1:2-3)
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.
(1 Peter 1:3-6)
